Primary Election Results Signal a Major Turning Point in Virginia Politics

June 20, 2023

CHARLOTTESVILLE  — In response to the Virginia primary election results, in which nearly all of Clean Virginia’s 25 supported candidates in competitive primaries won their races, Clean Virginia’s Executive Director Brennan Gilmore said,

“Today’s election results definitively show Virginians are ready for a new era of politics — one in which everyday Virginians, and not corporate monopoly interests, come first. Voters showed up to advance over 20 candidates supported by Clean Virginia to the general election this November. The resounding success of this bold, diverse slate of candidates demonstrates the electorate’s commitment to clean, affordable energy and long overdue good governance reform.”

Clean Virginia founder and board chair Michael Bills added, “I founded Clean Virginia to combat Dominion Energy’s unchecked political spending which has fueled egregious overcharges, skyrocketing electricity bills, and a woefully inadequate approach to the climate crisis. It is an honor to support talented candidates who are challenging a powerful corporate monopoly that depends on its legislative influence to pocket excess profit from Virginia consumers. These candidates have demonstrated a commitment to not only reforming Virginia’s broken campaign finance system, but reshaping Virginia into an exemplar of ethical governance.”

Clean Virginia supported candidates in 25 competitive primaries, at least 22 of which likely won their races. All of these candidates showed a commitment to affordable, clean energy, responsible governance, and the elimination of undue influence from Virginia’s utility monopolies:
