BREAKING: 14 Democratic leaders urge Shannon Taylor to recuse from Dominion cases if elected

In case you missed it: The Richmond Times-Dispatch broke a major story this morning: a group of 14 Democratic leaders, including Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, sitting legislators, and former federal and state elected officials, are calling on attorney general candidate Shannon Taylor to address what they call “serious ethical concerns” over the $650,000 her campaign has received from Dominion Energy.

The letter raises concerns about conflicts of interest should she be elected to an office responsible in part for regulating the utility. The attorney general routinely appears in matters involving utility rates, environmental compliance, and consumer protection in which Dominion is often the opposing party.

The letter, signed by 14 Democratic officials, calls on Taylor to:

  • Disclose all Dominion-related campaign contributions
  • Commit to recusing herself from Dominion matters if elected
  • Explain how she would maintain prosecutorial independence in light of the utility’s financial support

As the letter notes, “citizens have a right to expect that their attorney general will make decisions based on law and facts, not on obligations to major campaign donors.”
