Dominion Energy Funnels Another $150K to Shannon Taylor, Bringing Total to Unprecedented $800K
Largest direct contribution from a utility to a candidate in a competitive election in U.S. history

RICHMOND, VA — With just three days until Virginia’s primary election, Attorney General candidate Shannon Taylor has accepted another $150,000 from Dominion Energy, bringing the utility’s total direct contributions to her campaign to an unprecedented $800,000.

This is the largest amount ever directly contributed by an electric utility to a candidate in a competitive race in U.S. history.

“Dominion Energy is pouring historic sums into this race for one reason: to protect its financial and political operations from real accountability,” said Brennan Gilmore, executive director of Clean Virginia. “The attorney general is the people’s lawyer, responsible for defending Virginians against corporate abuse. No one taking $800,000 from Dominion Energy can credibly claim to represent the public interest.”

Dominion is a state-regulated monopoly that frequently appears opposite the attorney general’s office in matters involving rate hikes, consumer protection and environmental enforcement. The scale of the utility’s financial support for Taylor raises serious questions about whether her office could independently oversee a corporation that is routinely subject to investigation and legal action by the attorney general.

Taylor’s opponent, Jay Jones, has rejected all contributions from Dominion and other regulated electric utilities.

“Virginians deserve an attorney general who works for them, not for the biggest polluter and most powerful corporate donor in the state,” Gilmore said.

Dominion is also backing Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares with $600,000 in this election cycle, bringing the utility’s total spending on attorney general candidates this year to more than $1.4 million.

Election Day is Tuesday, June 17th. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
