A historic sweep: Spanberger, Hashmi, and Jones usher in a new era for clean, affordable power and ethical government
For the first time, all statewide electeds and the majority of House delegates reject utility monopoly money

RICHMOND, Va. — Clean Virginia today congratulated Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, Lieutenant Governor-elect Ghazala Hashmi, and Attorney General-elect Jay Jones on their victories, calling the results a decisive mandate for clean, affordable, reliable energy and accountable government.

“Virginians have made history,” said Brennan Gilmore, executive director of Clean Virginia. “For the first time, every statewide office and the majority of the House of Delegates will be held by leaders who do not accept money from Virginia’s monopoly utilities. That marks a sea change in Virginia politics and a clear rejection of the pay-to-play system that has dominated Richmond for decades.”

Spanberger, Hashmi and Jones ran and won on a shared commitment to lower costs, modernize Virginia’s energy system and end the corrosive influence of corporate utility money in state government. A total of 50 Clean Virginia–endorsed candidates were elected to office. These victories mark a turning point for millions of Virginians who have long suffered the consequences of political corruption and monopoly control.

Dominion Energy, the state’s largest corporate political donor, contributed more than $15.9 million this election cycle, including $1.5 million to Jason Miyares, the incumbent attorney general. This $15.9 million is the largest amount donated by any corporation during a political cycle in Virginia history.

“We look forward to working with this historic leadership team to advance reforms that ensure Virginians have power they can afford and a government they can trust.”
