Clean Virginia Responds to SCC Order to Approve Dominion’s Chesterfield Gas Plant

RICHMOND, Va. — In response to The State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) final order approving Dominion Energy’s petition to construct and operate a new gas-fired power plant in Chesterfield County, Clean Virginia issued the following statement:

“Today’s disappointing decision from the SCC lays bare that Virginia’s energy regulatory system is fundamentally broken and needs urgent repair,” said Brennan Gilmore, Clean Virginia’s executive director. “Despite major flaws in Dominion’s application and planning process, the Commission granted approval to a gas plant that breaks Virginia’s commitments to clean air, and further drives up electric bills, which would not be necessary absent the gluttonous energy demands of Big Tech companies. If this is the decision the Commission came to under existing rules, then it is upon Virginia’s elected leaders to better align these rules with the interests of all Virginians.”

The plant is estimated to cost $8.05 billion to build and operate, and will increase bills for Virginians at a time when they are already stretched too thin. It will also disproportionately impact the health and environment of frontline communities who have spent years fighting the project.

The SCC received close to 2,000 comments and heard live testimony from 80 public witnesses, with an overwhelming majority of testifiers opposing Dominion’s plan.
