Candidate funding principles

Clean Virginia supports candidates who stand up to utility monopoly influence and fight for a clean, affordable energy future and a government that works for all Virginians

Here’s how our candidate funding program works:

Standard Funding Program

We believe that no state-regulated monopoly, like Dominion Energy or Appalachian Power Company, should be allowed to financially contribute to legislators tasked with overseeing them. To protect consumers, ensure accountability, and uphold public trust, we provide annual Standard Funding to incumbents aligned with this principle. This ensures that candidates doing the right thing still have access to campaign funding.

Additional Funding

We provide additional financial support to candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to clean, affordable energy and building a government that works for all Virginians.

About our Endorsements

Clean Virginia endorses candidates committed to working toward a future where every Virginian has access to clean, affordable energy and elected officials are accountable to the people they represent.

Currently, 60 members of the General Assembly have taken a principled stance against accepting campaign contributions from regulated utility monopolies Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power, including their top executives and lobbyists. In addition, these members do not own stock in these companies.

A recipient of funds may or may not receive a Clean Virginia endorsement.

Clean Virginia only supports candidates and incumbents for statewide offices—including for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General—and the Virginia General Assembly—including for State Senate and the House of Delegates.
